WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN TRAINING YOUR EMPLOYEES

WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN TRAINING YOUR EMPLOYEES

As discussed in a couple of our previous blogs, additional training is being seen as an increasingly popular career benefit among prospective employees.

So why should an employer, offer training to employees?

There are many benefits for both parties. Companies who don’t provide additional training, may appear to be disinterested in their workforce and place little value on them. This isn’t the impression you want to be giving to prospective employees.

In a recent survey carried out amongst 1,400 people by Love Energy Savings, they found that 49% of those surveyed, “believe that their employer is offering them enough learning and development opportunities through training.” (Smallbusiness.co.uk)

First of all, providing training could actually save the company money in the long term. If you were to send a couple of employees on a training day, they could come back from it and share what they have learned with the rest of the employees. This saves additional company expenditure, but it also means the rest of the team are getting the highlights and most useful extracts of the training, so it is saving time and resource. This training can then be passed onto all future employees. Also, training employees and providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills, means that they can become a greater attribute to the company and potentially increase the company’s performance.

Training employees shows that you are thinking of the future, and preparing for what is to come. Whatever industry you work within, there are always going to be changes. Changes that you can see coming, and those that blind-side you. The changes that blind-side you, are the reason that your employees should have frequent up to date training to help them understand and deal with the changes. As Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” (BrainyQuote) Training is the preparation that is needed to succeed when changes and unforeseen events occur.

Training reduces a high employee turnover. The attrition rate of your employees will decrease if employees know that they are being invested in. This increases your employee’s loyalty to the company, they will feel that they are valued and appreciated. High attrition rates can mean disruption and wasted time for your business, so it is best to do what you can to decrease this.

Not only will it reduce your employee turnover, but it will attract new talent to the company. As we discussed above, more and more potential employees are seeing additional on-the-job training as a positive attribute to a company, and something that they are keen for their new employers to provide.
