ARE YOU A WORKAHOLIC?

ARE YOU A WORKAHOLIC?

Is there a difference between someone who works hard, and someone who works too hard? Some people take their passion and ‘quest for success’ to the next level, so much so that they will do anything to achieve it, including over working themselves. This sort of person has been labelled a workaholic, and here are a few of the warning signs:

Everything is about succeeding. A workaholic will strive to be the best, and if they don’t achieve their best, then they won’t feel fulfilled and will be disappointed in themselves. They will take on extra tasks at work and strive to meet unrealistic expectations, but are disheartened when they don’t meet them.

Workaholics are usually the first to arrive at the office, and the last to leave. Working longer hours, and maybe even working through their lunch break, doesn’t mean that they are necessarily getting any more work done, or being any more productive.

Workaholics may start to physically let themselves go because of all of this extra stress that they’re putting on themselves. Not getting enough sleep from being kept up at night, eating more fast food so as to save time on lunch, and not going to the gym or doing any exercise because they just don’t have enough time. These poor lifestyle habits are going to make them irritable, unproductive, and generally unwell. Workaholics may even take to drinking as a sort of relaxant to help them unwind at the end of the day, which can be the start of a very slippery slope.

Workaholics will usually end up straining the relationships that they have with people. This is due to the fact that they tend to miss important milestones because of their work, and they devalue their personal priorities.

Most commonly though, is the inability of a workaholic to switch off, even when they’re not at work. If they’re stressed about work when they’re not there, then they are going to be even more stressed when they are there. This isn’t going to be good for anyone, especially themselves.

There’s a difference between working extra hard (e.g. if you have an important deadline coming up), and over working yourself all of the time. If you feel that you are becoming a workaholic, take a step back from the situation and evaluate your work, schedule your time well and remember the important things in life.
