6 EASY WAYS TO INCREASE MOTIVATION IN THE WORKPLACE

6 EASY WAYS TO INCREASE MOTIVATION IN THE WORKPLACE

We all have those days where we are not motivated to do anything, and that is normal. However, if you frequently feel like that, then something needs to change. You may be asking yourself, how can I stay motivated at work? Or, if you are a manager you may be wondering, how can I keep my team motivated at work? Well, now you can stop asking yourselves those questions! After completing my own research, I have devised 6 simple steps to increase both your motivation, and the morale of your team!

  1. Offering incentives/rewards for great work:

Having work recognised is one of the most important factors in employee motivation. This may seem obvious, however, 25% of organisations don’t offer any sort of employee recognition which, in turn, can lower the morale of a team. Looking at the research, a recent study completed by Genesis Associates (a UK based recruitment agency) found that 85% of workers stated they feel more motivated to do their best when there is an incentive (The Business News). I understand that budgets for each company differ in relation to their size, but an incentive can be anything from the recognition as employee of the month/quarter or a yearly bonus for a hard-working team.

  1. Set small, measurable goals for yourself:

We all know what it is like to have a work project that feels as though it is never ending, and coming into work everyday with little visible progress can affect how motivated you feel. To encourage yourself to continue, set clear and achievable goals for each day. This way, each time you conquer each goal you will feel a boost of motivation.

  1. Applaud results:

This is something that fits well with setting goals. It provides plenty of opportunities to applaud results of the team along the way. I don’t mean you need to applaud your team for turning up for work on time every day, however, when your team reach or exceed their targets, it’s encouraging to be recognised for the hard work!

  1. Positive vibes only:

We all have reviews at work, and nobody likes hearing about their poor performance and what they need to do improve on – no matter how thick skinned we think we are. Instead, when giving feedback make it like a positive sandwich – give a positive comment on performance, then something to improve on, and finally, another positive. This will make people feel like they are good at what they do, but just need slight improvements.

I also understand it isn’t easy to be happy in the workplace all the time, but if something goes wrong at work, try and see the best in the bad situation. It will uplift you and inspire you to get it right next time (because we don’t get it right all the time – even if we don’t want to admit it). If it is one of your colleagues feeling negative, give them some encouragement. Tell them they will get it right next time or tell them all the things they are good it. It’s only a little gesture, but it could go a long way!

  1. Food for thought:

There’s nothing worse than sitting at your desk feeling distracted by your hunger pangs because you’ve ditched breakfast due to lack of time, again! On the other extreme, it’s also not pleasant feeling sluggish because you’ve scoffed your face with unhealthy food such as crisps and chocolate when sat at your desk. Both of these things are easily done and can leave us feeling distracted, tired, and far from motivated to get things done! If this sounds familiar, it’s time to change your habits. Make a point of getting up earlier to eat a hearty breakfast, and bring in healthy snacks to curb your appetite throughout the day. Eating healthier, and at a reasonable time will make you make you feel more refreshed and ready to take on your work projects!

  1. Take a break:

It is impossible to work to your full potential without regular breaks. If you’re constantly focusing your attention on something like a computer, your mind begins to wander. This can affect both your productivity, and quality of work. We aren’t built to sit down all day every day, so, every couple of hours take a walk around the office to stretch your legs and give your brain a few minutes rest. Doing this will enhance your mood, making you feel more motivated to complete projects.

Although it may only seem like I have provided you with a few tips, they are much easier to achieve without having to make drastic alterations to your life. If you aren’t feeling motivated at work, or you notice your team isn’t motivated, try out these examples, you will notice the difference!
