WEBBO’S COMMENT OF THE WEEK: POLISH MEP’S COMMENTS ON WOMEN

Mr Korwin-Mikke, a Polish nationalist member of the European Parliament, has recently been in the news regarding his comments at a recent meeting of the European Parliament. Korwin-Mikke said that, “women must earn less than men because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent.” (BBC) This has caused outcry from women all over the world, and he has been branded the most sexist man in politics.

He appeared again on television, on International Women’s Day, causing more insult to injury by saying, “by the way, shorter men earn less than tall men. The blondes earn more than the brunettes. There are the differences and the differences should not be equalised.” (ITV)

His comments are one of the many reasons why days such as International Women’s Day are celebrated. International Women’s Day is a “global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.” (IWD) Comments such as Korwin-Mikke’s are proving that there is still inequality between men and women, and people such a himself believe it is rightly so. Views like these are the reason that women are having to fight for equal rights and equal pay, and from this incident, the road to parity between sexes still has a long road ahead.
