POSITIVE THINKING BREEDS POSITIVE OUTCOMES!

POSITIVE THINKING BREEDS POSITIVE OUTCOMES!

Positive thinking is described as a mental state whereby a person adopts an optimistic attitude towards their day to day life (Collin’s Dictionary). You may have heard quotes such as ‘positivity inspires productivity’ or, ‘your attitude determines your direction’, and think that keeping positive constantly is impossible. There is a common misconception that positivity relates to being happy, but it isn’t exclusively linked. We are all human and have days where we don’t necessarily feel happy, but it is possible to stay positive at work in the face of a bad day/mood.

My aim is to encourage you to keep an open mind for slight changes in your life, and positive thinking will soon follow. It is possible for everyone.

So, why should you keep a positive mental attitude? That is the main question here. Positive thinking is commonly connected with 3 skill sets in the work place (SmallBusiness):

  • Team work
  • Innovation and creativity
  • Adaptation

Firstly, team work. Keeping a positive mind at work is suggested to make employees communicate better with their colleagues. This communication can include suggesting improvements at work, or even developing relationships with the team. This in turn creates a positive working environment for the whole group of employees.

Moving onto innovation and creativity at work. It is considered that if an employee comes to work thinking positively, it increases the likelihood of helpful suggestions to support a business’ growth.

Lastly is adaptation in the workplace. Coming to work with a positive attitude, makes employees more accepting of change. An example could be new technology in the workplace. Being reluctant to such a change won’t allow you to grow with the business, and you may find that you are left behind. Accepting this change allows you to excel in the company whilst also aiding its growth.

These skill sets are beneficial for both you and your employer. They strengthen you as a person allowing you to improve your CV, with the added potential to get recognised by your superior (e.g. if you suggest new helpful ideas). Additionally, these skills help the company you work for to improve and grow which is imperative to your employers. It’s advantageous to all!

So, I have told you why it is important to stay positive, but how do you attain a positive attitude? Here’s a few ideas (Huffington Post):

  • Get a hobby: Having a hobby that you enjoy and excel in will make you feel positive and subsequently will help to make you bring this mental attitude to work with you.
  • Have fun: Work is such a big part of our lives it can sometimes seem difficult to fit in some ‘me time’. It is important that you have fun out of work doing things that you enjoy doing. This could be anything, going out with friends or going to the cinema. The activity of your choice doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive, there are plenty of free things to do such as going for walks.
  • Meditation: This may seem different to some people and you may not know where to start. However, there are current apps such as ‘Headspace’, which allow you to relax and free your mind with someone talking to you to help you to put things into perspective, and in turn, think positively.
  • Writing: It seems my tips are getting further away from the norm, but it may help you. Research has suggested that writing about your positive experiences helps to improve your mood and feel more positive. Your writing doesn’t necessarily have to be factual, you can use your imagination to create optimistic stories.

The above tips are only a few that have worked for me personally, or have worked for people I interact with. Everyone is different and have a variety of things that makes them feel more positive, so try out anything new to get those positive vibes into your workplace.
